Xanthe. Hong Kong

I’m eighteen and I’m from Australia. I have been living in Hong Kong since 2010. I like to hang out with my friends and just do the usual teenage stuff. Makeup makes me feel beautiful. I like to enhance my features, it makes me feel better about myself. If I were on a desert island, the one thing I couldn’t live without is eyeliner – that’s all I need to make me feel better. It doesn’t make me feel different, I just feel better in general when I have eyeliner on.

I definitely feel pressured, especially about my appearance. You feel you’ve got to look a certain way to be accepted by friends as our society is very image-driven - especially with social media now. Media is constantly there to remind us, “this is what I look like”, but you don’t look like “this”. Especially with apps like snapchat, where you can see stories and you’re like “they’re having fun at a party and I’m sitting at home alone!”.

When I look online, I see everyone else’s lives and I often see that people are always with others on their social media. It’s almost like people can’t be alone to be happy - which is a sad thing - because being alone is so important. Everyone needs their space and they should be able to be happy on their own, without the need for constant stimulation by friends and other people.
