Sophie. Los Angeles.

Growing up I always struggled to accept my hair... Many of my closest friends have never seen my full afro.

Growing up I always struggled to accept my hair. I hated the idea of being different, being unlike all the other girls in the class. So I spent my childhood trying to make it as inconspicuous as possible. To this day I very rarely wear my hair out in public, and in fact, many of my closest friends have never seen my full afro.

Recently, I travelled to Catalina Island off the coast of California with two of my best friends. On the last day, they convinced me to take my hair out. In that moment, swimming in the clear water of a rocky bay, not only did I feel beautiful, but I felt incredibly free.

It may seem silly but it meant a lot to me.

It is so important for women to have the freedom to feel beautiful whichever way they choose. There is nothing more beautiful than confidence in oneself.
